Arcade Solutions MVS to Home Cart adapter. This is an item many Neo
fans have been waiting for, the ability to pay MVS games on the Neo Geo Home
Cart system. Why is it people want to play MVS games? Well, it is the
price! Metal Slug MVS for about $60 or Metal Slug home cart for $600+!
First, the programming
inside Neo Geo carts, whether MVS or home, is identical. The only different between the two carts is the size. When
the cart is actually installed, it looks the the BIOS in the Neo system
to determine whether to start in MVS mode or home mode. So any MVS cart
(with the exception of The Irritating maze) will run on the home system,
this is why you can convert MVS carts to home carts with the right
materials.
Anyway, this is the first such adapter released that has been able to
play every MVS cart. Other adapters I have seen have been able to play
everything up to KOF98 with some other random MVS carts that do not
work. One in particular was side loading, and was a very flimsy build, and
looked like it put some serious strain on the slot in the Neo System.
The Arcade Solution's adapter does not suffer this same fault. The
unit is extremely sturdy! And it is also a top loading unit, instead of
side loading. Obviously they did their homework when they were in the
design stages! :)
Anyway, I have tested around 40 MVS
games on the adapter I have, and
except for needing to clean some MVS contacts, they have worked
flawlessly! The slot they use for loading is an extremely tight fit,
should last for a long time!
Also, they added a little extra feature on the adapter itself, Stereo
plugs! Old Neo Geos have stereo lines feeding to the cartridge slot,
although new units (like mine :( ) do not have this connection made.
So, anyone with an unmodded older Neo can now have the benefit of the RCA
jacks for stereo sound instead of the headphone jack! Arcade Solutions
has told me that connecting the lines for the sound is a simple process
for those who can do a little soldering, and Jeff Kurtz has also stated
that on any Neo he mods he will add this connection as part of his
work.
The only thing I can say that I dislike about the adapter is the lack
of a case. Granted that would add extra expense, and I see no need for it,
but on the mass market, I would think it to be prudent to have the adapter
placed in a case.
In closing, all I can say is that this item is a gamers dream! Now
everyone can enjoy games like Strikers, Prehistoric Isle 2, and Captain
Tomaday on their Neo Geo home cart system. While the price might seem
high @ $400 (right now is is $299!), it is well worth it in the money
you will be saving in the long run not having to get games converted to
play on the home system, or needing to spend $600 to by
Garou, Mark of the
Wolves. 5 stars all around!
